Major Decarbonisation and Refurbishment Programme

The aim of the project was to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions and operating costs, while supporting Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust‘s Net Zero Carbon targets, helping protect against rising energy prices and modernising the healthcare infrastructure.

The programme includes large-scale Solar PV installations and roof replacements, with upgraded insulation compliant with Part L of building regulations as well as the installation of replacement energy-efficient windows.

Working closely with Trust Estates teams and clinical staff, works were carefully planned and phased to minimise disruption to hospital services. Controlled access arrangements, clear communication and strict infection prevention and control measures were maintained throughout.

Our DBS-checked operatives are trained in patient care awareness and understand the requirements of working in occupied clinical settings. Through detailed planning and close stakeholder liaison, we deliver complex projects safely while maintaining patient wellbeing, operational continuity and high standards of quality

Challenges

The primary challenge was delivering a large-scale decarbonisation project within a live healthcare environment, where patient care remains the highest priority.

We’re going to see a lot of really positive impacts from [the project]. We’re going to get some renewable energy that’s generated throughout our summer periods which is going to be fed back into our hospitals at Bradford Royal Infirmary and also at St Luke’s which is going to support not only our decarbonisation agenda but in the face of rising energy prices it means that we’re going to be paying the lowest possible rates.

It’s important to decarbonise the NHS estate because our buildings are getting older and more expensive to maintain and operate. We need innovative and smart solutions such as this to drive down costs.

Overall it’s been a really positive relationship with CLC. Our Capital team work closely with them to manage the project programme to make sure that we’re delivering on key milestones on time to manage costings. I know that I could get in touch with our project manager at CLC; he’s very responsive and has really helped with engagement throughout this project.

I’d certainly recommend working with CLC. They’ve been excellent in helping us manage the programme and identify retrofit improvements alongside the solar installations, helping us reduce costs overall.
