Pharmacy Aseptic Suite Transformation

Sector

Healthcare

Location

North West

Service

Refurbishment

The programme included first and second fix mechanical and electrical installations, construction of airlock and gowning rooms, and installation of floor-to-ceiling welded hygienic wall systems (Gemclad) to create fully sealed environments. Advanced HVAC systems were integrated to deliver controlled air quality, filtration and pressurisation across interlocked spaces ranging from unclassified corridors to Grade D and Grade C cleanrooms, with Grade C providing the highest sterility. The project also included specialist flooring, sterile finishes, and full cleanroom validation and commissioning for oncology drug preparation, all delivered within a 16-week programme.

What we did

Our Pharmacy Aseptic Suite Transformation at Halton General Hospital involved the full strip-out and conversion of a former pharmacy intake and storage area into a highly specialised aseptic cleanroom facility within a live hospital environment.

Key challenges included integrating complex HVAC systems to maintain strict pressure regimes, constructing ultra-clean sealed environments, and delivering specialist M&E works within an existing footprint. These were overcome through a carefully sequenced programme, from strip-out to commissioning, and close collaboration with Estates and Pharmacy teams.

Working in a live environment required detailed planning, controlled access, and adherence to infection prevention protocols. The result is a high-performance cleanroom facility that ensures contamination control, improves operational efficiency, reduces reliance on external supply chains, and supports faster, patient-specific treatment delivery.

Innovations, challenges, solutions

Through our specialist healthcare expertise, we delivered a GMP-compliant aseptic facility within an operational hospital, enabling on-site preparation of injectable medicines including chemotherapy and intravenous nutrition.

“CLC has worked closely with the Trust Estates and Pharmacy teams on delivering this project as part of the Trust’s capital programme. This facility will be vital in allowing us to manufacture aseptic drugs on site, improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing patient care through faster, tailored treatments.”
