Decarbonisation

The project involved replacing outdated and failed street lighting around the Travellers Hill complex with a sustainable solar solution, reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based electricity. Concept’s team worked on-site to install streetlights equipped with solar panels and batteries housed in the column bases, providing reliable, energy-efficient lighting. The design accounted for local climate and ecological considerations, ensuring long-term performance without extensive electrical repairs. The installation improved visibility, safety, and sustainability, contributing directly to the island’s decarbonisation goals.

What we did

Delivered the design and installation of a solar-powered street lighting system as part of a wider decarbonisation programme on Ascension Island.

Ascension Island’s remote location and unique tropical ecosystem presented logistical and technical challenges. Transporting materials and personnel required careful planning, while the existing infrastructure was largely unserviceable. Concept implemented solar-powered lighting to eliminate reliance on fossil-fuel energy and minimise environmental impact. Each unit was configured to local solar conditions, ensuring consistent performance despite variable weather patterns. The project was completed successfully, receiving positive feedback from residents and providing a blueprint for future decarbonisation initiatives.

Innovations, challenges, solutions

The primary challenge was delivering a sustainable, reliable lighting system in a remote, environmentally sensitive location.
